              Raising children
   in cross-cultural relationships

When children are born and the couple become parents, their view of life changes and they will be proven in their ability to solve problems (Romano, 2008). All the subjects that were left unspoken between the couple previously, will come to the surface seeking consensus (Romano, 2008). Each partner wants to see part of their identity passed on through (Romano, 2008).

Studies demonstrated that raising children is a frequent issue in all cross-cultural marriages (Bustamante, Nelson, Henriksen Jr., & Monakes, 2011), as for these marriages, it brings some aggravating factors: for instance, which language the children should learn, which religion they should follow, which cultural model of interaction should be applied, how to correct children’s disobedience, and how much freedom they can have in adolescence, are common questions that need to be answered (Romano, 2008).

The effects of these issues vary: children can be a reason for keeping the couple together and a goal to fight for a better future (Romano, 2008). On the contrary, some couples may use their children to express all unresolved marital problems (Romano, 2008).

It will all depend of the level of couple’s maturity and desire to overcome their differences to build a happy family (Romano, 2008).
