Definition of acculturation

The term “acculturation” (Akhtar, 2011) refers to the level of the individual adaptation in another country, whilst keeping part of their original culture (Romanenko, 2012). “Acculturation” (Akhtar, 2011) is a long process which includes assimilation of a new culture and its values, but also grieving for what was left behind, in the country of origin (Akhtar, 2011). In a cross-cultural relationship, one or both partners will be living in a new
country and, in their own individual time, assimilating part of the culture of the adopted land (Akhtar, 2011).
