        Effects of immigration on
         cross-cultural couples

The effects of immigration permeate the entire life of cross-cultural couples, as after getting married, at least one of the partners must immigrate to the partner's country (Akhatar, 2011).

One or both partners will be dwelling in an unknown land, experiencing chronic grief (Akhatar, 2011) for what they have left behind in their home country, as well as all the anxieties and stresses which accompany migration (Romano, 2008). They are entering into a relationship with someone from another culture, and will have to adapt to each other and learn how to deal with their differences (Romano, 2008).

When both partners will live outside their home countries, both will be also entering into a relationship with a new land, and experiencing together the effects of the immigration (Romano, 2008).

However, immigration is a very individual process and people experience different reactions, which will have to be shared in the cross-cultural marriage (Akhatar, 2011). As everyone is different, every cross-cultural relationship is also different and there is no manual that contains answers for their exact condition (Romano, 2008).

The success of the relationship will depend of the level of resilience, as well as their willingness to learn and grow together (Romano, 2008).

     Efeitos da imigração sobre
          casais inter-culturais
